Posting at random is one of the biggest time drains for business owners: every morning the question "what do we post today?" and then a rushed post that serves no goal. A monthly content plan fixes that by making your posting organised, consistent and tied to your business objectives.
Why plan monthly?
- It saves time: you think once and execute all month.
- It keeps your messaging and visual identity consistent.
- It lets you line content up with seasons, events and offers in advance.
- It makes it easier to see what worked and what did not.
Step 1: Set the month's goal
Do not stop at "get more followers". Pick one or two goals: more enquiries, promoting a new service, or building trust in your brand. The goal decides what kind of content you need.
Step 2: Understand your audience
Write a short description of your ideal customer. What problems do they have? What do they keep asking? Which platform do they use? Customer messages, comments and frequently asked questions are a good source.
Step 3: Choose content pillars
Pillars are recurring themes your posts revolve around. Three to five is enough. For example:
- Educational: tips and how-tos from your field.
- Promotional: your services and products.
- Trust: behind the scenes, genuine customer feedback and stories from your own experience.
- Interactive: polls, questions and simple contests.
Step 4: Pick platforms and frequency
Do not try to be everywhere. Choose the platforms where your audience actually spends time, and commit to a number of posts you can really sustain. Three posts a week, kept up steadily, beat ten in one week followed by silence.
Step 5: Build the calendar
- Create a grid of the month's days in a shared file or a scheduling tool.
- Add known dates first: holidays, events and planned offers.
- Rotate your pillars across the week so no single type dominates.
- For each post, note the idea, the format (image, short video or carousel), a draft caption and the platform.
- Leave room for reactive posts that respond to news or trends.
Step 6: Produce in batches
Design, shoot and write in focused sessions rather than day by day. Use fixed design templates to speed things up and protect your identity. Then proofread everything once more before scheduling, especially spelling and dates.
Step 7: Publish and engage
Posting is only half the job. Set aside time daily to answer comments and messages. Engagement helps your posts travel further and builds a relationship with your audience.
Step 8: Measure and improve
At month end, review the numbers your platforms provide: reach, engagement, clicks and messages. Ask yourself:
- Which posts performed best, and why?
- Which pillars underperformed and should be reduced?
- Which posting times worked better?
Write down your findings and use them to shape next month's plan.
